I. A Decision of Discretion

Before I ever studied prosecutorial discretion as a concept, I experienced it through a decision of discretion.

As Georgia debates changes to who holds and exercises prosecutorial discretion under legislation like HB 369, the question is not just who has the authority to act—but how that authority is used.

It came for me in the form of a court filing -my name listed as the defendant, the State of Georgia on the other side, and a conclusion that could have gone very differently. Probable cause existed. The case could have moved forward. It was for a felony no less. It was earth shattering to me.

But it didn’t.

The reason given was simple: prosecutorial discretion.

II. The Tension of Prosecutorial Discretion

Prosecutorial discretion is often described as a legal tool of discernment. It functions more like a portal – one that determines which cases move forward and which are quietly stopped.

That is where the tension begins.

The system relies on discretion to function. But the people inside it experience discretion as something else entirely: a moment where the trajectory of their lives can change based on a decision they do not control.

And in that gap, between how the system explains itself and how people experience it – is where questions of fairness, consistency, and legitimacy begin to arise.

III. My Lived Experience Inside the Gap

That gap is not abstract to me. I have lived inside it. In my particular case, probable cause existed. The legal threshold to move forward had been met. The system, on paper, had everything it needed to continue.

It didn’t.

The decision was made not to prosecute. The explanation was simple: prosecutorial discretion.

But what that explanation does not capture is the weight of what could have happened instead.

This was not a first encounter with the system where every option remained open. I had already used the First Offenders Act in a prior case. That path – often used to give people a second chance – was no longer an option for me.

Which meant this decision was not just procedural. It was consequential.

A different choice could have resulted in a felony conviction. Along with it, a set of consequences that extend far beyond the courtroom – affecting employment, housing, civic participation, and the basic trajectory of a life.

That is what discretion holds.

Discretion did not change the facts of the case. It changed what those facts would mean for my future.

IV. Scale and What Georgia Just Changed

That experience is not unique to one case. It reflects a broader reality about how prosecutorial power functions—particularly in offices like that of Fani Willis, where discretion is exercised at scale.

In Fulton County, discretion is exercised at scale – across thousands of cases, facts, circumstances, and possible outcomes.

That scale matters.

That is why Georgia’s recent move to make certain metro Atlanta elections nonpartisan matters to me in a different way.

Because behind those ballot changes are the very offices where discretion is exercised—district attorneys, solicitors, and others whose decisions shape outcomes in ways the public does not always see.

Changing how those officials are selected does not eliminate discretion. It changes how the public evaluates the people who hold it.

And when the visibility of that evaluation shifts, so does the foundation of trust that discretion depends on.

V. That Is Where Power Lives

Prosecutorial discretion is described as a matter of judgment. And it is. But it is also something more difficult to define: a form of power that operates in the space between what is possible and what is chosen.

I am here, in part, because that power was exercised in a way that gave me a second chance. That is something I carry with real gratitude.

Gratitude does not eliminate the question. It sharpens it.

Because the same discretion that made one outcome possible could have produced another. The same system that allowed for restraint also held the authority to act.

And in that space—between what the law allows and what power decides—is where legitimacy is built, or strained.

“That is where power lives.”

I. The Frame

Power doesn’t disappear when the electorate changes. It reorganizes.

That’s what makes the decision over where to hold the 2028 Democratic National Convention more than a logistical choice. It is a signal to donors, sponsors, and most of all, voters — a declaration of who the party sees, and just as importantly, what it is willing to recognize.

Before any votes are cast or speeches delivered, political parties reveal themselves through quieter choices: where they invest, where they organize, and where they choose to gather.

The Democratic National Committee’s decision on a 2028 convention host — between cities like Chicago, Boston, Philadelphia, Denver, and Atlanta — is one of those choices.

In reality, though, it is something more: a test of whether the party can align where it tells its story with where its power is actually being built.

Because the future of the Democratic coalition isn’t abstract. It has a geography.

And if that future is being built anywhere right now, it is being built in Atlanta.

And that shift isn’t theoretical. It is already reshaping how power is built and contested.

II. The Coalition Has Moved — Has the Party?

Over the past decade, Georgia has moved from a reliably Republican stronghold to one of the most competitive states in the country. But the real story is not just electoral outcomes. It is the transformation underneath them.

That transformation can be seen in suburban counties that have shifted rapidly toward Democrats

— especially Cobb, Gwinnett, and Henry. Those counties have changed alongside the growth of Black, AAPI, Latino, and younger voters, creating the diverse electorate responsible for Georgia’s political realignment.

The next wave may come from places like Fayette, Newton, Forsyth, Cherokee, and Hall Counties — communities with emerging diverse constituencies that are changing more slowly than suburbs closer to Metro Atlanta’s population core, but changing nonetheless.

The most vivid recent example came in the 2021 Senate runoffs, when Georgia elected Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff, defeating incumbent Republicans Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue. Those victories marked the first time since 2002 that Democrats won federal statewide elections in Georgia.

More recently, Georgia voters elected Dr. Alicia Johnson and Peter Hubbard to the Public Service Commission, defeating Republican incumbents Tim Echols and Fitz Johnson in 2025. That matters because the coalition is not just showing up in high-profile federal races. It is moving into the institutions that govern energy, infrastructure, affordability, and growth.

That coalition is not forming on its own. It is being organized, mobilized, and sustained by networks on the ground. Organizations like Black Voters Matter and Voto Latino have played a key role in expanding participation among Black and Latino voters, helping translate demographic change into electoral power.

Atlanta isn’t just symbolic of the Democratic coalition’s future—it is one of the places where that future is being operationalized in real time.

What’s happening in Georgia isn’t episodic.

It’s sequential.

III. Atlanta as Infrastructure — Not Just Symbolism

Atlanta has long been a global economic hub, in part because of Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. As one of the busiest airports in the world, it helped make Metro Atlanta a region defined by movement, growth, and expansion.

MARTA reflects both the promise and limits of that growth. Its train and bus network provides essential mobility for residents who depend on public transit, but the region’s sprawl also shows why transit access remains one of Atlanta’s central equity questions.

 The true ideals of the Atlanta Beltline take this one step further. In Ryan Gravel’s thesis, he depicted an Atlanta focused on transit that connects 45 of Atlanta’s historic neighborhoods. It interconnects MARTA with a new Beltline Rail to address the sprawl and traffic congestion that drivers, riders, and pedestrians have to deal with day in and day out. 

Projects like the Stitch in Downtown Atlanta aim to repair the damage caused by the interstate system by reconnecting neighborhoods long divided by the I-75/85 Connector.

But that effort is not isolated. Similar concepts have emerged further north, including proposals to cap the Midtown Connector from North Avenue to 14th Street, as well as early-stage ideas in Buckhead to reconnect areas divided by GA-400.

Taken together, these projects point to something larger: a corridor-wide attempt to undo the logic of infrastructure that once prioritized movement over connection.

Atlanta is not just growing. It is beginning to reconsider how its systems shape who can move, who can connect, and who belongs.

Add in Atlanta’s HBCUs — Morehouse, Spelman, Clark Atlanta — and organizing networks focused on Black, Latino, young, and working-class voters, and the point becomes clear: Atlanta is not just where the coalition appears on Election Day. It is where the coalition is educated, organized, moved, housed, connected, and tested.

Coalitions don’t just emerge. They are built through infrastructure, institutions, and repetition.

IV. The Recognition Gap

Democrats have often been slow to recognize where their future constituencies are emerging. Their reliance (or lack thereof) on messaging to core voters has come to haunt them in close elections such as 2000, 2016, and 2024. And it all comes back something I call: the recognition gap. 

That gap is visible in the cities being considered to host the 2028 DNC. There are legacy cities like Boston, Chicago, Denver, and Philadelphia, which offers familiarity and stability, and then there is Atlanta, which offers growth, friction, and change.

 This isn’t a strategy gap. It’s a recognition gap.

A national or statewide party that doesn’t recognize its coalition risks weakening turnout, misreading priorities, and most of all: losing legitimacy. 

Power that is not recognized is power that is harder to sustain.

V. Why 2028 Matters

2028 will be a transition year for the Democratic Party. New leadership, new coalition pressures, and a changing map will force the party to decide whether it is organizing around the past or preparing for the next decade.

That matters because the next decade will be shaped by fights over voting rights, climate resilience, infrastructure, and democratic legitimacy. Those issues will fall hardest on the very communities Democrats rely on to build governing power.

VI. Why Not the Other Cities?

Chicago, Boston, Denver, and Philadelphia all matter. They carry history, infrastructure, stability, and familiarity. But Atlanta offers something different: a live case study in where the Democratic coalition is moving now — and where one of the country’s most diverse electorates is still being built.

VII. Closing

The Democratic Party does not need to find its coalition. It is already being built in places like Georgia.

The question is whether the party is willing to meet it there.

Don’t just campaign in the future.  

Recognize it. Convene in it.

There is a specific kind of frustration that comes from having your reality simplified into something it is not. It reaches deep into who you are, how you identify, and how much energy it takes to keep explaining yourself to people who have already decided your experience is too complicated to take seriously.

To be fully seen, heard, and known is a powerful thing. But too often, people minimize the identities and realities of others because they do not understand them. People are told their realities are distortions—simplified, dismissed, or explained away by people who do not have to live inside them.

That matters because we do not just misunderstand complexity. We often relabel it as distortion so it becomes easier to ignore.

I have said many times that we need to acknowledge people’s identities even when we do not fully understand them ourselves, because what may seem unfamiliar to us may be someone else’s lived reality.

I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2024, and that diagnosis brought both clarity and shock. For years, I wondered why I was the way I was: an insomniac, gay, adrenaline-fueled, overthinking, people-pleasing person trying to make sense of myself. I was a decent singer, an okay writer, and, more than anything, a reality-bending thinker.

To exist felt both breathtaking and exhausting.

For much of my life, I believed God created everything we see, hear, and think. But I was never fully satisfied with that answer. There had to be more. I had to be more. Even with my insecurities, mood fluctuations, chemical imbalances, religious shame, and growing concern for the planet and humanity, I knew my life required a deeper honesty. I had to acknowledge the objective realities within myself and within the world around me.

People simplify bipolar disorder all the time. They treat it like a mood, an attitude, or something you can overcome if you simply try hard enough. But bipolar disorder is not just a passing mental state. It is a condition that can destabilize mood, emotional regulation, sleep, health, and overall well-being. It is dismissive to suggest that someone can simply think their way out of something that shapes how they experience themselves and the world.

And this does not only apply to bipolar disorder.

I have known people whose realities are dismissed in similar ways. One person I know lives with dissociative identity disorder and manages more than ten distinct identities in their daily life. Another is a trans man who transitioned early in life and now lives fully as himself, including as a successful drag king in his own right.

Their lives are not abstractions. Their identities are not debates. Their realities are not distortions simply because someone else does not understand them.

They move through the world each day hoping to be recognized, while knowing they may also be ignored, questioned, or dismissed. I value their friendships and perspectives because their lived realities are just as breathtaking, difficult, and joyful as mine can be.

And that is where this becomes policy-relevant.

Because when institutions fail to recognize people’s realities, they do not merely misunderstand them. They design systems around that misunderstanding.

When systems are built around a narrow definition of reality, people fall through the gaps. We deal with systems all the time, often without thinking about them: financial institutions, governments, religious organizations, corporations, grocery stores, libraries, movie theaters, coffee shops. Each relies on people, rules, categories, and assumptions to function.

And within those systems, someone decides what is recognized as real.

When people are not recognized, they are often ignored, denied, or forced to translate themselves into terms the system can understand. That can harm a person’s mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. At a human level, our systems should be built with enough dignity and flexibility to recognize people as they actually exist.

When people are not recognized, they lose trust in systems. And when trust is lost, participation wavers or disappears altogether. Over time, that weakens the very institutions people were asked to trust in the first place.

We need systems that see people clearly and serve them fully.

We do not just need systems that reach people.

We need systems that recognize them.

Before I ever studied redistricting law or the mechanics of electoral maps, I understood something simpler: power does not disappear when people change—it reorganizes.

That’s what makes Brian Kemp’s call for a special redistricting session feel like more than routine governance. It feels like a response under pressure—not just to a Supreme Court decision, but to a decade of transformation across Georgia, where the electorate has shifted faster than the institutions designed to contain it.

And now, those institutions have a chance to redraw the lines.

The first place to look is Georgia’s 2nd Congressional District, currently held by Representative Sanford Bishop. Bishop has represented the district since 1993, after being elected in 1992 alongside President Bill Clinton. He was the first Black representative to represent Georgia’s 2nd District.

That history matters.

The district itself is a product of Voting Rights Act enforcement following the 1990 census, when majority-Black districts were drawn to ensure representation that had long been denied. At the time, Democrats still held a majority of Georgia’s congressional delegation—something that has not been true since.

Today, the district stretches across much of Southwest Georgia. It is largely rural, but includes key population centers like Albany, as well as parts of the cities of Columbus and Macon.

And that geography is exactly what makes it vulnerable.

If redistricting proceeds, the most likely strategy would be to further fragment those population centers—particularly Columbus and Macon—diluting the concentration of voters who have historically sustained the district. The goal would not be to eliminate the district outright, but to restructure it in a way that changes who it can elect.

The next place to look would be the 6^th District in metro Atlanta. It covers parts of Cobb County, Fulton County, Douglas County, and Fayette County. It is currently held by another Black representative, Lucy McBath, who has held the district on and off since the 2018 midterm elections during Trump’s first term.

McBath’s victory was not an isolated event. It was part of a broader suburban shift across metro Atlanta. Jon Ossoff’s narrow 2017 loss in the 6th showed the old Republican firewall cracking in real time; McBath’s 2018 win broke through it; and former Representative Carolyn Bourdeaux’s 2020 victory in the 7th confirmed that the shift was not confined to one district.

After the 2020 census, Georgia Republicans redrew the 6th District into a far more conservative seat, pushing McBath into the neighboring 7th District, where she defeated fellow Democratic Representative Carolyn Bourdeaux in 2022. Then, after federal courts found Georgia’s maps violated the Voting Rights Act, lawmakers redrew the map again before 2024. The new map created another majority-Black district in metro Atlanta, altered the 6th once more, and McBath returned to run and win there again.

Her record as both a campaigner and legislator stands out for one reason: she has had to win again and again under entirely different political conditions. Her repeated adaptation has made her one of the clearest examples of how redistricting does not just reshape districts; it reshapes political careers.

That is why the 6th matters in this fight. It represents a different kind of threat to Republican mapmakers than Bishop’s 2nd District: not a Voting Rights Act legacy district, but a suburban realignment district. Both are equally representative of how Georgia relies on both constituencies from both districts in building and serving a more equitable and forward-facing populace.

If the 2nd represents the representation Georgia was forced to recognize, the 6th represents the coalition Georgia is still struggling to accept.

Redistricting debates are often framed as technical exercises—lines on a map, numbers on a page, compliance with legal standards. But in a state like Georgia, they are something more. They are a reflection of who power recognizes, and who it resists.

Georgia’s 2nd and 6th Districts tell that story in two different ways. One was created to ensure representation that had long been denied. The other emerged as voters reshaped the political landscape in real time. Together, they represent not just geography, but evolution.

And that is what makes this moment so consequential. Because even if new maps do not change the outcome of the current election, they will shape the conditions of the next one.

The question is not whether Georgia will change. It already has. Georgia is not just redrawn. It be being decided.

1. Before I Had the Language for Systems

Before I had the language of capacity, legitimacy, or institutional design, I learned scale from inside a megachurch.

I learned that scale is not accidental. It is designed.

For years, I thought my dream was to become a worship leader. Since middle school, I imagined myself helping build something from the ground up: a church plant, a worship team, a space where music could make people feel connected to something larger than themselves.

CrossPointe became the place where I got to study that dream from the inside. As the sole worship intern for that year, I learned how a church plant could become a megachurch not only through belief, but through structure: staff meetings, worship schedules, rehearsal planning, volunteer coordination, sound checks, stage lights, and the quiet operational systems that made Sunday morning feel seamless.

The goal was excellence in delivery. Remove the distractions. Eliminate the friction. Create an atmosphere where people could enter, sing, feel, listen, respond, and belong.

That was the first lesson: scale depends on more than inspiration. It depends on logistics.

2. What Megachurches Got Right About Scale

Megachurches like CrossPointe understand that reaching people requires more than sincerity. It requires infrastructure.

What went into a Sunday morning was nothing short of amazing to me as an intern. CrossPointe used a churchwide system to schedule leaders and volunteers across services: worship team, audio team, visual arts team, greeting team, children’s ministry, youth ministry, and other ministries all aligned around the church’s theme for the week. The themed sermon series would be entered in advance with the pastor’s notes, accompanying Scripture, and the flow of service.

The logistics of it were excellent to me. It took a village to make it all come together.

There was an immediate call to action built into the atmosphere. The lights were lowered for worship to minimize distractions and elicit an emotional response. The greeting team would welcome attendees with donuts and coffee. The worship team would lead three to four songs, one often tied to the offering. Then the pastor would give his sermon, followed by a time of response and a closing song. If anyone wanted to speak with someone about faith, another set of volunteers was available at the end of the service.

CrossPointe had two Sunday morning services, one at 9 a.m. and another at 11 a.m. Celebrate Recovery met on a weeknight. Youth ministry gathered on another. The college ministry, The Pointe, met on yet another night. Across all those services, the leaders shared the same goal: to lead people into worship, no matter what they looked like or where they came from, at scale.

That was the power of the model.

CrossPointe’s own language was built around welcome: “Come as a visitor, leave as family.” That promise mattered to me. It was part of why the institution felt so powerful. But years later, I find myself asking a harder question: what happens when a system can call people family while still treating parts of who they are as something to be corrected?

They understood reach. They understood something many institutions miss: meaning does not travel through sincerity alone.

It travels through systems.

3. The Machine Behind the Moment

But what formed me most was not only what happened on Sunday mornings. It was what I saw during the week.

When I was not at college, I had to be at the church by 9:30 a.m. I sat in weekly staff meetings led by Pastor David. The staff would fill a room toward the back of the church, everyone attuned to his seriousness and occasional subtle humor. He would explain why he had chosen the sermon series for the coming weeks. It was calculated, informative, and intentional. I often felt like I was supposed to leave those meetings more motivated to serve.

I spent time with Spence, the worship pastor who mentored me. He would tell me that the heart must come first, and that the singing and playing would follow. He taught me the churchwide scheduling system used to build an entire service with all the teams involved. I played keys a few times and led with my guitar at others. Timing always seemed to matter most.

I watched how worship was planned before it became emotional, how logistics became atmosphere, and how leadership decisions shaped what the congregation experienced as seamless.

Those meetings taught me that scale is not just about size. It is about coordination. It is also about cost. One week, I found out how much the monthly power bill was, and it was in the thousands. Scale required calendars, conversations, expectations, rehearsals, volunteers, timing, and the quiet discipline of making a large institution feel personal.

I was not on the outside looking in.

I was inside it, learning how reach was built.

And yet, this is where I learned that reach is not the same as recognition.

4. Reach Is Not Recognition

Megachurches taught me that scale can gather people across difference. But they also taught me that gathering people is not the same as accepting them. A system can welcome a crowd while still denying parts of the people inside it — often to the detriment of their very identity.

CrossPointe could gather people across race, class, age, and background. But gathering people is not the same as recognizing them.

The guilt and shame that come from the construct of sin were still embedded in their theology and delivery. There were reservations about who you could fully be once you had faith. When identity becomes something to be corrected rather than honored, belonging becomes conditional.

I heard it through subtle conversations, jokes, and calls to respond. I felt it even more because I was on the inside, and I knew I could never be fully myself if I stayed.

We are human regardless of who we identify as. Any system that requires people to shrink themselves in order to belong has confused reach with recognition.

CrossPointe understood reach. They understood something many institutions miss: meaning does not travel through sincerity alone.

It travels through systems.

I could admire the scale of the system and still recognize its limits. I can still reflect on the leaders I trusted to further my craft. I could see how it reached people, how it moved people, how it built meaning through repetition, music, infrastructure, and shared purpose.

But reach was not the same as recognition.

That is when I knew I was not going to live a lie about the truest part of myself.

I was going to walk away from everything I knew — and from the dream I had carried through most of my youth.

5. The Recognition Loop

Scale can gather people. Recognition determines whether they are allowed to remain whole once they arrive.

That is why I think of belonging as a loop, not a promise. First comes reach: the ability to gather people across difference. Then comes the belonging threshold, when the system becomes large enough to define who does and does not belong. Then comes the recognition audit: the moment when the institution must ask who is welcomed, who is corrected, who is excluded, and who is erased.

Accountability comes next. That means reforming leadership, language, access, and care. Only then can a community return with fuller recognition.

Recognition doesn’t just happen haphazardly or by chance. Belonging is maintained through recognition, not assumption. It must be intentional.

6. Why I Walked Away

The truth is at CrossPointe it felt like home, but there was always an element that felt off. That I would never truly be able to be my full self. That I was just walking in sin by coming out. That I could never lead worship ever again because of my true identity. I was integrated enough to see the system from the inside — and still free enough to walk away.

I could see what the system could do. I could also see what it could deny. From everything I learned, I simply could not stay and live a lie among my mentor, my friends, my church members, my pastors, and my family. I made the decision to walk away from everything I knew and cared for. It was one of the hardest things I ever have done because it felt like a part of my identity itself was being severed from me. But what felt like severing was also becoming.

It reminded me of a scene from Star Wars: The Clone Wars, when Ahsoka Tano leaves the Jedi Order after realizing the institution that formed her could no longer be trusted to recognize her truth: “The Council didn’t trust me. So how can I trust myself?”

That was how walking away felt to me. Not dramatic in the same way, but spiritually familiar. I had been formed by a system that gave me language, discipline, and purpose — and yet I could no longer stay inside it without losing myself.

7. How It Shaped My Politics Now

I no longer believe in the same way I once did. I have grown apart from the church at large, and my views are now far more humanistic and secular than they were when I was younger and serving from the inside. I see the influence they hold in our society, and my focus now is to rather integrate the good from what I learned in the church: feeding the poor, clothing the naked, giving rather than receiving, and continuously trying to be truthful.

There was one thing, more than anything else, that I carried forward from my experience with megachurches: the ability to scale through reach. It moved from church to democracy, climate, governance, and institutional legitimacy.

Today, my focus is no longer worship leadership. It sits at the intersection of democracy, climate, and governance. But the question remains familiar: how do institutions reach people without losing accountability to them?

I no longer want systems that merely reach people. I want systems that recognize them.

8. The Broader Lesson: Scale Must Answer to People

Megachurches taught me scale — the capacity to reach people through infrastructure. Walking away taught me that reach must be accountable to recognition.

Capacity matters because it allows systems the ability to act, scale, and deliver outcomes. Reach matters because it can gather people across difference. Infrastructure matters because it gives systems a framework to work from. But capacity without recognition becomes exclusion. And scale without moral checkpoints becomes power protecting itself for power’s sake.

The lesson I carried with me is not that scale is bad. It is that scale must be governed. To reach people is not enough. Systems must remain answerable to the people they reach.

Megachurches taught me that scale can move people. Walking away taught me that scale must answer to them.

We often repeat this line as reassurance. It gives us the simple motivation of the more perfect, and equitable union we seek to aspire to be. As if justice is a destination we are slowly but inevitably approaching. But history suggests something far less comforting:
The arc does not bend on its own.

The arc bends when pressure is applied—by movements, by crises, by structural strain.
And just as often, it resists.

Adaptive Continuity requires participation—because the arc only bends when people force it to, again and again.

Continuity is not the absence of change. It is the management of it. As democracies face more complex problems with more diverse populations of every race, religion, ethnicity, and identity,  we must have the will to evolve. We do this through ensuring we expand our voting and human rights not diminish them. It encourages legitimacy.

We increase capacity to usher in a plurality of many peoples not just a few. We also respond to new threats through ethical, and humanistic standards that treat everyone equally under the law.

It is through doing these adaptations to the system we modernize our moral compass, but also risk weakening constraints originally designed. It tests legitimacy and can create division, forcing a system to reinvent itself in order to remain functional.

The Tradeoff Triangle: every system must balance legitimacy, capacity, and constraint.

Crisis → expand capacity → weaken constraint

Each follows a different pattern—even when aiming at the same goal. 

If systems must scale to remain relevant, then legitimacy cannot be an afterthought. It must be reinforced at key moments. Not through constant restriction—but through deliberate checkpoints where power is reassessed, constraints are reintroduced, and the system is brought back into alignment with its original purpose.

There is a case study I am noticing in the ever-increasing AI race and an accompanying lawsuit between the two founders of OpenAi, Elon Musk, and Sam Altman.

Musk argues that Open AI was meant to remain a nonprofit, and argues that public ownership and corporate partnership with Microsoft has destroyed the positive, humanity-minded vision they started together. He has argued with his own company, xAI, that a constraint-first system that places guardrails before growth can occur. 

Altman defends that OpenAI was meant to evolve with that exponential growth that it has experienced since starting as a nonprofit. It is through a capacity-first system that he argues will meet the expansive growth with guardrails and oversight as the vision matures of what OpenAi truly was meant to be.

The dispute is not just about AI. It is about whether systems should preserve their original constraints—or evolve to meet reality.

Climate change exposes the limits of slow institutions. The thresholds are physical, not rhetorical. Emissions accumulate. Heat rises. Infrastructure fails. Disasters compound.

If governments are going to respond at the scale climate change requires, they will need tools capable of accelerating coordination, modeling risk, translating research into policy, and helping public agencies act before crisis becomes collapse.

This is why the capacity argument matters. A system that scales is not automatically illegitimate. In some moments, scale is the only way to meet the size of the problem.

But climate also reveals the danger of capacity without constraint. The same AI systems that could help governments respond to climate change require energy, water, infrastructure, and public accountability. Without checkpoints, the tool built to help avoid thresholds could become a threshold of its own.

That is why adaptive continuity requires more than growth. It requires goalposts. Scale must trigger review. Expansion must trigger audit. Power must be brought back into alignment with public purpose.

The question is not whether AI should scale. The question is whether it can scale with enough democratic oversight to remain worthy of the public trust.

To meet climate thresholds, governments need capacity. To survive that capacity, democracies need checkpoints.

The warning to our republics is this: systems rarely collapse in a single moment. They reinterpret themselves—often to avoid collapse.

When institutions aren’t utilized as they should be, then they drift. When that happens, power is taken away from the many to few. Authority centralizes. And liberties in turn are weakened. It normalizes the erosion of democracy in real time.

The arc of the moral universe may bend towards justice.
But only when systems are forced to respond to the pressures placed upon them.

The question is not whether the arc bends— but who is doing the bending, and how much resistance remains.

Most elections announce themselves loudly.

They arrive with rallies, ads, polling memos, social media buzz, candidate drama, and enough noise to make the stakes feel glaringly obvious.

Judicial elections rarely do.

They are quiet. They move differently.

They sit beneath the surface of public attention, even when the decisions attached to them shape the rights, protections, and governing rules people live by and under every day.

That is what makes Georgia’s Supreme Court races so important.

Not because they are loud.

Because they are not.

And in politics, silence is not always absence.

Sometimes, silence is where power settles.

There’s a tendency to treat judicial elections as background noise—technical, distant, disconnected from daily life.

They’re not.

The Supreme Court of Georgia is where policy doesn’t just get interpreted—it gets locked in. It gets interpreted.

It is the final stage of the system.

And what happens there shapes outcomes that most people assume are decided elsewhere.

• Whether a ballot is counted or contested

• Whether environmental protections are enforced or weakened

• Whether access to healthcare expands or contracts

This is where governance becomes durable. Or doesn’t.

That’s what makes these elections different.

Not louder.
Not more visible.
But structurally decisive.

And that’s the paradox:
The quieter the election, the more power is being exercised without resistance.

For over a century, these elections have existed—but rarely changed outcomes.

So what does it mean to vote in a system that almost never moves?

The truth is, stability is the point.

It enshrines incumbents into office, reinforcing the idea that justices are fixtures—interpreters of the law rather than participants in political swings. Courts are meant to be insulated, not reactive.

This continuity protects the rule of law.

But over time, that stability can begin to look like distance.

Judicial elections are meant to exert change, but in practice, they rarely shift outcomes. And when nothing seems to change, voters begin to disengage.

The system doesn’t break—but it bends toward apathy.

When outcomes are almost always the same, elections can feel less like moments of decision—and more like rituals of confirmation.

Voters in Georgia—where participation remains active, even when outcomes rarely shift.

They can begin to centralize authority in ways that feel distant from public accountability, even if that distance is unintentional.

So if elections don’t produce visible change, what role do they play?

Not a façade—but something quieter. A system that continues to function, even as engagement weakens and meaning becomes less clear.

And yet, there are moments when the stakes become undeniable.

The Georgia Supreme Court decides cases on voting rights, reproductive rights, privacy, labor, environmental protections, and consumer safeguards. These are not abstract decisions—they shape daily life.

Campaign messaging reflects rising attention to traditionally low-profile judicial elections.

These elections are meant to be nonpartisan. But when incumbents are appointed by partisan executives and operate within broader political networks, that distinction can begin to blur—especially when voters are rarely given meaningful choices.

Systems don’t break all at once.

They drift—slowly, quietly—until the gap between public expectation and institutional response becomes impossible to ignore.

Georgia’s judicial elections have long been defined by stability.

But as awareness grows and stakes become clearer, the question isn’t just who wins—

It’s whether the system itself is beginning to respond.

Across issues—from energy to governance to elections—the pattern is the same.

Watching how the conversation around cannabis legalization is showing up in Georgia right now brings another lens of equity—across race, class, orientation, and identity.

It’s an issue that bridges people, but it also carries a history. One where Black communities—Black men in particular—have been disproportionately impacted.

What stood out to me wasn’t just the issue itself, but how it’s being engaged.

A 2025 poll shows that 56% of Georgians now support full legalization of recreational cannabis. At a certain point, that’s not fringe—that’s direction.

Legalization wouldn’t just shift policy—it could open up an industry with real economic potential for communities that have historically been excluded.

There are still valid questions—especially around environmental impact and energy use—but those exist alongside well-documented medicinal benefits and growing public acceptance.

What’s interesting is how some campaigns are beginning to recognize this moment.

Even something as simple as tying voter registration to 4/20 reflects an awareness of where people are—and a willingness to meet them there.

That’s what responsive systems look like.

Not just reacting, but recognizing moments, aligning with them, and acting with intention.

When that doesn’t happen, the gap between public sentiment and policy starts to widen.

And over time, that gap weakens trust.

The Fight for the House Is Where It Becomes Power

The old map is still here, but a different Georgia is already pressing against it. This is a story about the suburbs, the coalition, and the chamber where political change stops being symbolic and starts becoming power.

There are moments in politics when change is already underway, but power has not caught up to it yet.

That is Georgia now.

The state has been shifting for years — more diverse, more suburban, more politically impatient — but its institutions still carry the shape of an older guard. The old, gerrymandered map is still here. The old assumptions are still here. But they are under pressure.

That is why the Georgia House matters so much.

Not just because it is winnable, though I think it is. Not just because it would be a major Democratic victory, though it would.

The fight for the House matters because this is where political change stops being symbolic and starts becoming power. It is where demographic change meets legislative control. Where coalition becomes governing capacity. Where the future either enters the institution or gets locked outside of it.

And that future is no longer abstract. It is arriving district by district — in narrowing margins, in fast-changing suburbs, in communities that no longer fit the old political script, and in a coalition that is becoming harder to ignore.

The question is not whether Georgia is changing.

It is whether the House will be forced to change with it.

I keep coming back to that, because I still think too many people underestimate how close this chamber really is.

Not easy. Not guaranteed. Not wrapped in a little bow.

But close enough now that you can feel it.

For too long, Democrats in Georgia have talked about power like it is always somewhere off in the distance. Always one cycle away. One turnout surge away. One demographic shift away. Like it is a gorgeous outfit hanging in the closet that we are somehow never allowed to wear.

But I do not think that is true anymore.

I think the Georgia House has become one of the clearest battlegrounds in the country because Georgia itself is changing faster than its political institutions want to admit. The old power structure is still here.

But underneath it, another Georgia has been getting dressed.

• More diverse.

• More suburban.

• More educated.

• More impatient.

More aware of what is actually at stake in state government.

And eventually, a changing people put pressure on an aging structure. Eventually, the margins get tighter. Eventually, the districts everyone treated like permanent property start looking a lot less secure.

That is how chambers flip.

Not with one dramatic thunderclap.

Not with one magical election night.

But district by district. Margin by margin. Bit by bit, until the impossible starts looking late.

There are 180 seats in the Georgia House. Ninety-one wins control.

That is the threshold. That is the number. That is the line between having opinions about power and actually having your hands on it.

And the road to 91 is not some great mystery.

It runs through the suburbs.

That is the part people still do not fully get. Georgia’s future is not being written only in Atlanta proper, and it is not being decided by some tired little urban-rural cliché either. It is being shaped in the places between and beyond: Gwinnett. North Fulton. Fayette. Cherokee. The outer ring of a metro area that keeps growing, diversifying, and getting harder to contain inside an old Republican story about what Georgia is supposed to be.

These are not all deep-blue districts. That is not the point. The point is that they are no longer comfortably, carelessly red.

And once a district stops being safe, it becomes political terrain. Once it becomes terrain, it becomes contestable. And once it becomes contestable, power has to fight for its life.

That is where opportunity lives.

A lot of these communities do not fit the old boxes anymore, if they ever really did. Black voters who have long understood the stakes of state power because they have had to. Immigrant communities building civic muscle in counties that were never meant to belong to just one version of Georgia. Young voters coming into political adulthood with absolutely no interest in inheriting somebody else’s stale assumptions. College-educated suburbanites who may not think of themselves as ideological, but who are tired — tired of chaos, tired of cruelty, tired of a politics that confuses performance with governance.

And none of that alone flips a chamber.

But together?

Oh, now we’re talking.

Because that is the real story here: coalition.

Not demographic fan fiction. Not lazy pundit math. Coalition. Actual coalition. Living, breathing, sometimes messy, always necessary coalition. The kind that happens when people realize their issues are not separate at all, just differently dressed.

• Housing costs.

• Healthcare access.

• Public schools.

• Transit.

• Reproductive freedom.

• Basic democratic competence.

Those are not isolated concerns. They are one argument about whether government is allowed to function like it gives a damn about the people living under it.

And that is why the House matters so much.

This is not just about who gets to pop champagne and tweet a victory graphic on election night. This is about who controls the machinery of the state. Who decides what gets a hearing and what gets buried. Who shapes the budget. Who controls committees. Who gets to move a vision — and who gets told to sit down and clap politely while the other side governs.

That is what people miss when they talk about elections like the story ends once the votes are counted.

It does not.

Winning is the doorway. Power is what comes after.

To me, that is the whole sequence.

First, mind.

A state has to see clearly before it can move clearly. Voters have to understand that the current majority is not permanent, that the old map is not sacred, that what exists now is not the final form of Georgia politics. Before institutions move, imagination moves. Before a chamber flips, people have to believe that it can.

Then, heart.

A coalition has to become emotionally real. Not just assembled for convenience. Not just patched together for one election and then sent home. It has to feel like something people belong to. Black voters, suburban moderates, AAPI communities, younger Georgians, college-town energy, regional-city Democrats — all of them recognizing that they are building toward something larger than their own lane.

That is what gives a coalition durability. That is what keeps it from collapsing the moment pressure hits.

Then, body.

The seats flip. The majority forms. The coalition enters the institution. And suddenly, all the urgency, all the values, all the organizing, all the hope and frustration and discipline take material form.

• Votes become rules.

• Rules become law.

• Law becomes lived reality.

That is the point.

Not just to win. To build a body capable of carrying the future into governance.

That is why I keep coming back to the Georgia House. Because this chamber feels like one of the places where Georgia is deciding what it wants to become.

Will it remain trapped inside a map that reflects an older order, one that grows less representative by the year?

Or will it finally begin to align power with the Georgia that already exists — in neighborhoods, in schools, in workplaces, in organizing spaces, in suburbs that have changed even when the political class keeps squinting and pretending not to notice?

And no, none of this is automatic. I am not interested in bedtime stories. Democrats can still fumble this. Turnout can dip. Candidates can underperform. Money can go to the wrong places. Coalitions can weaken. Fear can still outrun vision.

That is all real.

But so is the opening.

So is the momentum.

So is the pressure building under the surface.

And that is what makes this moment different.

It is not just hope. It is structure.

It is not just desire. It is alignment.

The conditions are there for a different majority to emerge if Democrats are disciplined enough to understand the battlefield and bold enough to act like power is actually meant to be won.

The road to 91 will not always look glamorous while it is happening. Most of the time, it will look local. Incremental. Uneven. It will look like one more district, one more organizer, one more field plan, one more conversation, one more narrow margin that suddenly matters more than anyone expected.

But that is how power shifts in a state like this.

• Quietly.

• Patiently.

• Relentlessly.

And then one day, all at once, the old map looks smaller than it did before.

When that moment comes, it will not be because Georgia changed overnight.

It will be because Georgia had already changed, and its institutions finally ran out of excuses.

Elections are often framed as choices between policies, records, and lived experience. But in moments of sustained public tension and crisis, those factors become secondary to something less visible and more decisive: how leadership is experienced.

Not just which decisions are made—but how those decisions arrive.

In recent years, cities like Atlanta have faced a cascading series of high-pressure events—mass protests, police-involved incidents, and ongoing debates over public safety and infrastructure. Each moment carried with its own complexity. Each required response.

And in each, leadership acted.

But for many, what lingered beneath was not simply the outcome of those decisions, but the sequence in which they occurred. Events escalated. Public emotion followed. Leadership responded in turn.

This sequence matters.

Because when leaderships is consistently perceived as arriving after events have already intensified, it creates a subtle but lasting impression: that the system itself is responding to pressure rather than shaping outcomes. Even effective decisions, delivered within that sequence, can still feel reactive.

This is not a failure unique to any one leader. Cities operate in real time, often with incomplete information and under immense pressure. Reaction can be, in many ways, unavoidable.

But the distinction is not between reacting and not reacting. It is between reacting alone and establishing direction early enough that the response given feels grounded in something larger than the moment itself.

In periods of uncertainty, people are not only looking for action. They are searching for orientation.

They want to understand:

Where is this going?

What governs the next decision?

Will this happen again?

When that orientation is unclear, a pattern begins to form. Each event is managed, but the underlying instability remains. The next moment feels expected—if not inevitable.

This is where trust begins to erode.

And once trust erodes, leadership is no longer evaluated solely on effectiveness. It is evaluated on whether people believe the system itself is still working in their ultimate favor.

This dynamic becomes especially visible in a runoff election.

Runoffs compress the electorate. They remove causal participation and elevate voters who are paying closer attention—not just to what has happened, but to what might happen next. In this new environment, the question shifts.

It is no longer:

Who has the most experience?

It becomes:

Who understands the moment—and where is it leading?

Examples of this distinction are not difficult to find:

In Atlanta, Senator Jason Esteves’ leadership within Atlanta Public Schools demonstrated what proactive governance can look like in practice. Rather than responding to crisis after it emerged, APS, led by Esteves, moved towards greater financial and institutional stability, while navigating significant external pressure during during the proposed Buckhead cityhood movement. The result was simply improved outcomes, but a system that felt guided rather than reactive.

A similar dynamic can be seen at the national level. In the days leading up to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, President Joe Biden did not wait for events to unfold before addressing the public. He communicated the likelihood of conflict in advance, preparing both the American people and international partners for what was coming. That early signaling helped establish unity within NATO and reduced the shock of the moment itself. The response that followed was improvised—instead it was grounded in prior orientation.

These examples point to the same underlying principle: proactive leadership does not eliminate crisis, but it changes how crisis is experienced. It provides a framework through which events are understood, rather than forcing people to interpret them in real time without guidance.

In the end, the distinction is not between leaders who act and those who do not. It is between leaders who respond to events and those who people for what comes after. Reactive leadership can stabilize a moment, but it cannot always shape what follows. It is proactive leadership that provides the orientation and guidance needed to equip cities—and states—to handle complexity when it arises.

And in times of uncertainty, that difference is not theoretical.

It is what determines whether trust is to restore—or continues to erode.

Elections are rarely decided by policy alone.

They are decided by something quieter, more fragile—and far more powerful: trust.

Not trust in a candidate’s résumé.

Not trust in a single promise.

But trust in whether the system itself still feels responsive, whether the voices within it are still heard, and whether the decisions being made reflect something larger than control.

This is where most analyses of elections fall short. They focus on platforms, coalitions, and messaging tactics. All of that matters. But underneath those visible elements is something deeper—a pattern that shapes how power is gained, maintained, and ultimately lost.

It is a pattern I describe as the Sequence of Power.

Power does not collapse all at once. It shifts gradually. It begins with a change in thought, evolves into division, consolidates into leadership, and eventually presents a trade-off between stability and participation. By the time that trade-off is visible, the system itself has already begun to transform.

This is not just a theory of history. It is a framework for understanding the present.

And nowhere is that more visible than in a runoff election.

The Runoff Environment

Runoffs are not normal elections.

They are smaller, faster, and more concentrated. The electorate shrinks. Casual voters fall away. What remains are engaged participants and late deciders—voters who are not simply choosing between candidates, but interpreting what the race represents.

In this environment, the traditional metrics of strength—name recognition, résumé, institutional backing—still matter, but they are no longer decisive.

Because the question voters begin to ask shifts.

It becomes less about who has done the job before and more about:

“Who understands what is happening right now?”

The Trust Gap

When trust in institutions weakens, even competent leadership can feel distant. Decisions, however necessary, are interpreted through skepticism rather than confidence.

This creates what can be described as a trust gap.

And in that gap, something important happens:

voters begin to look for alignment, not just authority.

They are no longer persuaded by credentials alone.

They are persuaded by connection—by whether a candidate appears to understand the moment they are living through.

This is why campaigns that rely solely on experience often find themselves unexpectedly vulnerable. Experience speaks to the past. Trust speaks to the present.

And in a runoff, the present wins.

Reframing the Choice

The most effective campaigns in this environment do not simply argue that they are more qualified. They redefine what qualification means.

They shift the race from:

experience vs readiness

to something more immediate:

trust vs status quo

This is not a rejection of experience. It is a reordering of priorities.

It asks voters to consider not only who can lead, but how leadership should feel—whether it is distant and procedural, or connected and responsive.

Once that frame is established, movement becomes possible.

Voters who were undecided gain a rationale.

Voters who were hesitant gain permission.

And that is often all that is needed.

The Mechanism of Movement

In a runoff, victories are rarely built on massive persuasion. They are built on small, decisive shifts.

Late-deciding voters, particularly in diverse and suburban regions, tend to move not toward the most detailed policy plan, but toward the clearest interpretation of the moment.

A message that is simple, repeatable, and emotionally grounded can define that interpretation.

Not because it overwhelms the opposition, but because it clarifies the choice.

It gives voters language for what they already feel.

The Broader Lesson

The dynamics of a runoff election are not separate from the Sequence of Power. They are an extension of it.

When trust begins to erode, systems do not immediately collapse. They become contested. They become reinterpreted. They become, in a sense, open to redefinition.

Elections are one of the places where that redefinition occurs.

And the candidates who succeed are often those who understand not just the mechanics of campaigning, but the condition of the system itself.

Because in the end, voters are not only choosing leaders.

They are deciding whether they still believe in the structure those leaders represent.

And when that belief begins to falter, the race is no longer about who has the most experience.

It is about who can restore trust.

Complex statutes create:

• Longer rulemaking timelines

• Increased interagency coordination

• Greater reliance on state-level implementation

• Higher barriers to access for under-resourced communities

The Inflation Reduction Act demonstrates this dynamic. Its scale and ambition required extensive administrative translation across federal agencies and state systems.

The law created opportunity.

Administrative capacity determined access.

When design does not fully account for implementation conditions, the burden shifts to institutions that may already be under-resourced.

III. The First 100 Days as Institutional Stabilization

The first 100 days of an administration are often framed as a period of messaging and momentum. In practice, they are a period of institutional stabilization.

A serious administration must:

• Staff agencies rapidly and effectively

• Clarify regulatory authority early

• Allocate funding to match program scale

• Coordinate federal and state implementation

• Establish clear guidance for public access

Announcements without institutional preparation create expectation without delivery. Delivery requires capacity.

The sequencing of these actions determines whether policy implementation accelerates or stalls.

IV. Capacity Determines Credibility

Public trust is not built through policy design alone. It is built through visible delivery.

When climate investments reach communities:

• Legitimacy increases

• Participation expands

• Policy durability strengthens

When implementation is delayed or uneven:

• Trust erodes

• Access narrows

• Political vulnerability increases

Capacity is therefore not a technical detail. It is the foundation of credibility.

V. Institutional Design and the Risk of Fragmentation

A persistent design flaw in federal policy is the separation of climate investment from democratic capacity.

Climate programs depend on:

• Accessible application processes

• Local administrative readiness

• Public awareness and trust

• Equitable participation

When democratic infrastructure is not aligned with climate policy, implementation becomes uneven. States and communities with greater capacity move faster, while others fall behind.

This fragmentation weakens both outcomes and legitimacy.

VI. Regulatory Erosion as a Structural Risk

Recent federal regulatory reversals demonstrate how executive authority can rapidly reshape implementation capacity.

When enforcement declines or standards are rescinded:

• Agencies lose operational momentum

• Staffing pipelines weaken

• Rulemaking must be rebuilt
